Greenway/Upper Kirby Homes and Condos for Sale

Houston, Texas, is home to approximately 26 Fortune 500 companies, most of which are in the energy, technology, aerospace, or automobile industries, so it's no wonder the city has many business districts within its borders. Two of the most notable of these districts is Greenway Plaza and Upper Kirby. Greenway Plaza is situated along Interstate 619 Loop on the southwestern side of Houston. It's also three miles east of Uptown and five miles west of Downtown. Upper Kirby is the more commercial of the two business districts and is named after Kirby Drive, which was named for John Henry Kirby. Besides office buildings, Kirby is home to many commercial businesses and restaurants. At some point during the mid-20th century, a man named Kenneth L. Schnitzer came up with the idea of creating Greenway Plaza. As a part of his development plan, his company, the Century Development Corporation, began desperately buying up houses and tracks of land in the area. In 1973, Greenway Plaza opened and had since then become one of Houston's most significant mixed-use developments.

One of the biggest reasons potential homebuyers fall in love with Greenway and Upper Kirby is the abundance of natural green spaces that define the City of Houston. One of them is the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, a 14-acre estate once belonging to Ima Hogg, a well known and influential Houston philanthropist. It is one of the oldest known projects of its kind focused on sustainability. For example, only one tree was cut down when making room for Ima’s mansion, while every garden was designed around the existing trees. Another favorite attraction for both residents and tourists is the Houston Zoo located at 6200 Hermann Park Drive in Houston. Certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), this 55-acre zoological park is home to exhibits such as African Forest, McNair Asian Elephant Habitat, Kipp Aquarium, Birds, and Carnivores. Also, as it is in partnership with the AZA, the zoo does much in the way of conservation and preservation of natural habitats. For those who play golf, the Greenway and Upper Kirby neighborhoods are only minutes from Memorial Park Golf Course and Driving Range located conveniently at 1001 E Memorial Loop in Houston. This course is an 18-hole course featuring a covered driving range and a restaurant.
