Meyerland Homes and Condos for Sale
Meyerland is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas. The community, which lies in the southwest part of Houston, was named after the Joseph Meyer family, who in 1885 bought the acres on which the community was built. Meyer died in 1933, and the land was divided among his sons. In the 1950s George Meyer made the decision to develop his share of the land. It was one of the first deed-restricted communities in Houston. Meyerland suffered significant flooding during the 2017 Hurricane Harvey. The center of Houston’s Jewish Community, damage to several Meyerland institutions was repaired as a result of a donation from the Israeli government. Today some 30,900 people live in Meyerland.
Meyerland shoppers will want to be sure and visit the Galleria. With more than 2 million square feet, this popular mall is the largest in Houston. The Galleria has two hotels, more than 400 stores, several restaurants, an ice skating rink, tailor shops, beauty salons and a post office. There are several upscale stores in the Galleria, which boasts 26 million visitors a year. Animal lovers will want to check out the Houston Zoo. Located on three acres, you’ll find many different species of animals. The animals have a large space, so they are not up against each other. The seven elephants have a seven thousand square foot barn. Other exhibits include an African jungle, a birdhouse, an aquarium and a petting zoo. Science enthusiasts will want to check out the Space Center Houston, which offers attractions, exhibits and education programs regarding the space program. Another great place to visit is the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Here there are exhibits of gems, minerals, paleontology exhibits as well as a butterfly house and fossils from around the world.
Meyerland real estate is a mix of ranch-style homes, many that have been updated, and new contemporary homes. There are many parks for families to enjoy and the area is clean and well maintained. The schools in the area have a great reputation, and with the access to great shopping and dining, as well as a good bus system, and available health care, the basic needs are easily met.
